Hello AMHC readers!
My name is Lisa and I’m one of the folks who got this effort started. My own experiences and the experiences of friends and colleagues have convinced me that we need a resource focusing specifically on mental health among graduate students. For some of us, the competitive and stressful environment of grad school can quietly eat away at our well-being, while for others, it can trigger full-blown mental illness (e.g., anxiety disorders and depression).
I envision the AMHC website as a resource that will help grad students struggling with mental health concerns to feel less alone. The advice, ideas, and certainly the stories that will be shared here showcase the fact that many of us have struggled (some more than others) on our journeys through grad school. As a social psychologist, I’m highly aware of the immense benefits that social connection offers for our mental, physical, and emotional well-being and I hope that in some small way, this site can offer that sense of connection for grad students (and other early-career academics) who need it.
A little more about me: A Canadian of Dutch ancestry, I currently live and work on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation (Oakville, ON), but I’ve also been privileged to call Coast Salish territories (Vancouver, BC) home. I really like Star Trek, cooking, and anti-oppression politics.
